André Tavares thematisiert in seiner Salon-Trilogie die architektonische Praxis auf drei Massstabsebenen: das Städtische, die Nachbarschaft und das Häusliche. Den Anfang – zur Nachbarschaft – machte er am 10. März mit einem Samstagnachmittagsgespräch über Álvaro Siza und dessen 1974 begonnenes SAAL-Wohnbauprojekt in Porto. Kenntnisreich bot er Einblicke über die Entstehung, die Entwicklung und die gesellschaftliche und architektonische Bedeutung dieses Vorhabens. Im Gespräch mit Jacques Gubler, Urs Beat Roth und dem Publikum wurde der geschichtliche Bogen über die englische Gartenstadtbewegung (Ebenezer Howard, um 1900), die wohnbaugenossenschaftlichen Anfänge in der Schweiz um das Muttenzer Freidorf von Hannes Meyer (1919-1921) sowie die zehn Jahre später entstandene Siedlung Neubühl geschlagen.
[A. T.] What does Siza’s Bouça housing project have in common with Neubühl? This was the point of departure for a conversation on living and how architecture is subject to complex social dynamics. When the Bouça project was integrated in the SAAL operations for Porto, after the carnation revolution in 1974, it brought together high expectations for an impoverished population. It was time to aspire dignified houses and better living conditions. The organization of a cooperative movement – rising the voice of populations for their best interest – allowed Siza to design and build new and better houses. The process was far from easy and political shifts brought it to a halt half-way to completion. During the 1980s and 1990s Bouça was a renegade space, an example of how housing projects shouldn’t be. Siza’s fortune and recognition as an architect allowed to complete the project in the early 2000s. A new generation joined the cooperative and the production of housing liberated from the market’s pressure showed high-quality housing is possible with low prices freed from speculation.
In an afternoon promising spring, the avatars of Bouça were food for thought and discussion on themes such as property, generation gaps, social expectations and habits, in other words, on the life of buildings, designs, and architectural ideas. Although Neubühl’s history is very different from Bouça’s, they both refer to the higher expectations of modern society to present everyone with the best living conditions.
Der Salon zog eine Vielzahl von Interessierten an, nicht alle fanden in der Stube Platz. Die Stimmung war angeregt und warmherzig. Beim anschliessenden Apéro liessen sich neue Kontakte knüpfen oder bestehende erneuern, und die Gespräche endeten erst in der Abenddämmerung.
